The medicine is available for oral and intravenous administration. It is also available for tropical use in the form of eye drops and ear drops. Ofloxacin medication works by killing bacteria that cause infections. The drug belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. The drug is patented and has approval from FDA.
The common dosages of Ofloxacin are 200mg, 300mg and 400mg that are taken as single dose or divided in intervals. The maximum daily dose is 600 mg to 800mg. Ofloxacin tablets can be taken by mouth with food twice a day. The duration of the treatment will depend of the symptoms of infections and the patient’s response to the treatment. Side Effects of Ofloxacin include nausea, constipation, gas, headache, dizziness, excessive tiredness, pain, swelling, itching of the vagina, diarrhea and constipation.
Some serious side effects of the medication include fever, stomach cramps, shortness of breath, muscle or joint pain, blistering or peeling skin, fainting, change in color of urine, seizures, confusion, hallucinations, change in rate of heartbeat, shaking, anxiety, restlessness, numbness and blurred vision.
If the patient observes any of these serious or other unusual allergic reactions they should immediately consult the doctor. These is a medicine for the use of adults and must be used in case of children less than 18 years only with the advise of doctor. The drug is dangerous and has potential risk of causing harm to bones, joints, and tissues around joints in children.
Overdose of the tablets can cause drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, hot and cold flushes, numbness, swellings, slurred speech and confusion. The use of alcohol must be limited and the patient should be careful if they are involved in doing the work that demands alertness.
Though the medicine is known to excrete in breast milk there have been no reports of harm to the nursing infants. However breast-feeding should be done after consulting the doctor. The use of this drug during pregnancy is strictly recommended for pregnant women only if needed and advised by doctor.
