Terbinafine inhibits the growth of an enzyme, ergostereol that is a part of cell membrane as well as of the fungus and slows down their reproduction to treat the infection. Terbinafine obstructs the conversion of squalene to lanosterol and therefore ergosterol cannot be synthesized. The overall process causes fungal cell lysis.
For infection in fingernail one 250mg capsule should be taken once daily for 6 weeks. The capsule is to be taken for 12 weeks in case of toenail infections. Only a doctor can determine the duration of treatment and correct dose for individual patient.
Before taking on the treatment with Terbinafine some lab tests like fungal culture, KOH preparation or nail biopsy should be conducted to confirm the diagnosis of onychomycosis.

Some rarely occurring side effects include idiosyncratic, symptomatic hepatic injury, liver failure leading to death or liver transplant.
There are some adverse side effects of usage of Terbinafine that include malaise, fatigue, hair loss, vomiting, myalgia and arthralgia.
The overdose of Terbinafine can be dangerous and lead to adverse effects. Terbinafine interacts with certain drugs hence it is important that the patient, before taking the treatment must consult the doctor and inform him if he is allergic to certain drugs or if they are habitual of taking alcohol.
The pregnant women and the women who are trying to get pregnant must consult the doctor about taking the medication during pregnancy for the potential risks to the fetus. Breastfeed mothers should get the information form the doctor about excretion of Terbinafine in breast milk and whether it is safe to nurse the baby with breast milk.
If any unusual symptoms are observed during the treatment, the patients must immediately inform their doctor, drug supplier as well as to FDA. The patients should not start or stop the medication on their won without consulting the doctor.
